How do I prepare for my sessions? - You should come with 3 days of growth on facial areas (4-5 days on body areas we are planning to clear). We understand that our folks come to us in various stages of transition and it is our desire to provide an accepting environment where you will feel comfortable and safe.
When we talk about an average beard, we are talking about the number of follicles. Most folks don't know how many follicles they have, so we try to talk about the area that the beard covers instead. An average beard will begin on the neck at the Eve's apple and go up towards the jaw in a "V" shape. If the hair goes below the Eve's Apple, or if it spreads from one side of the neck to the other... If there is hair up on the cheek bones towards the eye... An average upper lip will have hair that thins out towards the corner of the mouth. If the pattern is mostly the same height all the way from the nostril to the corner of the mouth... How much growth do I need for treatment? 3 days growth is ideal for the face. 4-5 days on other body areas. If it gets too long, it slows us down. If it is too short , we can't work with it. Do hormones make a difference? Not as far as we are concerned with hair removal. Even if the texture of the hair has been affected by hormones, it is the number of hairs that we are concerned about. The same thing applies to hair that has been treated by laser. Do I need to shave the "South Pole" area in order to have it cleared? Yes. The "South Pole" area needs to have been shaved 4-5 days in advance. Why? Because after all the hairs are shaved, only the active ones will grow back in. This allows us to be much more effective. Yes, but couldn't I just cut the hairs with scissors? No. Cutting with scissors will leave all the hairs long enough to make it impossible to see which ones are fully active. "My Private Driver" is a local company which provides door-to-door driving service to our customers. They are generally less expensive than a taxi, and rides can be arranged from you hotel to our office and back, as well as to and from the airport. For more information, or to arrange a ride, give them a call at: 972-245-1270. You can also visit their website at: www.myprivatedriver.com. Where should we stay in the area?
What airports should I use in the Dallas area? Dallas Fort Worth International (DFW), is the largest airport with most airlines having connections through it. Love Field is a much smaller airport that primarily has service with Southwest Airlines.
You can buy groceries close by (Albertsons). Please feel free to bring lunch to the office where we have a kitchen/dining area complete with freezer, refrigerator, and microwave. You may want to purchase ice for your room. There are several fast food restaurants within walking distance (Pizza Hut, Burger King, Grandy's, KFC, etc.). There is also a book store, a gym, a Radio Shack, and an Alltech (for the tekkie nerd gals), all within a quick walk from the office. If you have access to a car, the office is near the Dallas North Tollway and there are several malls, heading north on the tollway. What do I do at the end of a session? At the end of the day when you get back to your room, start off by taking a nice warm shower to clean your body and relax the muscles from being in a chair all day. Then focus on the swelling. You should expect swelling and redness to be directly related to the amount of work that we did. Since the face swells the most and the upper lip most of all, please be prepared to spend the first night applying cold to the face and take 600mg (3x200mg tabs) of ibuprofen (Advil, Nuprin, Motrin) every 6 hours, as long as you are ok to take it. Other anti-inflammatories can also be used, including steroids, but steroids may increase your risk of infection. Staying on estrogen is fine. Injections of lidocaine seem to scare some folks much more than they actually should. Usually the fear of it is far worse than the actual event. We often work through previously numbed areas to make it as painless as possible. I honestly care about you and I hope it shows. Dr. Victoria Carpenter D.O. is the doctor legally in charge of the numbing and use of medications, yet all of us whom she delegates numbing to will treat you with the utmost kindness, sensitivity, and attention to safety. Some folks may think that numbing makes swelling, mainly because a numb area feels huge. Numbing does not cause an area to swell, electrology does. Swelling is normal and is directly related to how much work was done. The first clearings will cause the most swelling. This is especially true of the upper lip because the number of hairs being treated is the most ever, and the upper lip is not attached to bone underneath... so it can swell like a balloon. This is why we tell you to stay up and keep cold on it for the first night, while taking an anti-inflammatory such as 600mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours. The swelling on the first morning after we treat the upper lip is as big as it gets, and if you do your homework, it will be much better than if you just let it go. If you do not do your homework as suggested you may wake up to a baboon in the mirror. This is NOT the end of the world however, nor is it permanent, but allowing the swelling to go unchallenged will make the recovery period much longer. If you take care as we ask, you can expect the swelling to last about 3-4 days after the first clearing, and less after the others. Redness is part of the normal inflammation. It is actually pink and it diminishes each day. Just how many days it will last varies a lot from person to person, but there are some things that may help predict the duration. The more work we do, the longer it may last. The more fair skinned a person is, the longer it may last. The more weathered the skin has been, the longer it may last. The first few clearings are the most work, so the redness may last between a few days to a few weeks. From then on, it is much less of an issue. What can I put on my skin during the healing period? Do not apply make-up, oils, creams, sunblocks, astringents, alcohols, harsh soaps, or deep scrubs for at least 3 days (longer if the areas are obviously still healing). Make-up is usually contaminated with bacteria and the last thing we need is to pack that into your follicles. Almost any foreign substance that is introduced into the healing follicle will only prolong the healing process. |
